What's SEO and What's the Value?

What's the point in having a website if no one can find it? As offline indexes like the good-old yellow pages are being used less and less, online search engines play an enormous roll in the success of any marketing website.

Search Engine Optimization or "SEO", is the practice of fine-tuning the website to be indexed correctly and quickly by leading search engines. SEO will get your site listed on a multitude of search engines for the "key words" you choose.

These days SEO is becoming a household phrase, but little thought is given to the optimization portion. This is an ongoing process for making your website and indeed your marketing message in general, resonate with, and become relevant to, your target buyer.

Relevancy, itself, is the quality to which the search engine results pertain to the query. It's what separates the interesting from the useless.

What's key here is to bridge the gap between what your audience is searching for and what you're presenting in the marketplace. Technocrats love to use their own proprietary jargon to differentiate their products, but there are little or no search queries for meaningless jargon. You must use your audience's language.

So, even though the engineers would call it a "portable, external data device utilizing a universal serial bus interface", your audience would probably call it a "thumb-drive."

Use your audience’s language in every facet of your marketing and you will capture their attention and eventually their loyalty. In the age of information, relevancy reigns supreme.

JDM's 6 Keys to SEO Success

1. Don’t “Game” the System.

There are tons of ways to 'game' the system.  Search engines are in the business of presenting the most relevant results to a specific query.  When people find loopholes in how relevancy is calculated, they exploited it.  That's why the rules of SEO are forever changing.  The only thing that doesn’t change is organic relevancy.  Over time, if the site is relevant to visitors, it will increase in page rank.  There’s really no other long-term way around it.

The key to modern SEO is simply putting your best foot forward.  Don’t get caught-up in games.  They close the loop too fast and the risk of getting blacklisted is too great.

2. Lots of Links In, Few out.

If all roads lead to Rome, don’t give visitors a lot of roads to leave.  The number of links on a site were at one point, a good idea.  Today, they're just exit points.

That said, creating as many channels into the site as possible is not just common sense, it's also great SEO.  One of the larger factors engines use when calculating relevancy is quality of inbound links.  That is, how reputable are the links to your site?  This is hard to fake, and so it’s gaining in popularity.  Ways to maximize this are included in our Online PR white paper.

3. Meta-tags are Only Worth 10%

Don’t get too caught up in Meta tags.  They are worth less and less.  It is important, however, to know what they mean.

  • <Title> The page title. This is shown on the top of the window, the default bookmark title, and is used as the link in search engine results.  It needs to be relevant to the page.  “Welcome to JDM”  as a page title is neither relevant nor interesting.
  • <meta name=”Keywords”> These are the key words contained in the text of the page.  These are supposed to point the bot in the right direction.  They make their decisions based on the body, not the meta however.
  • <meta name=”Description”> This is really just the paragraph or so that goes under the title tag in search engine results.  Make sure it’s relevant to both the title and the page.

4. Don’t Spam the Engines

Once the website is complete, you’ll need to submit it to search engines.  However, don’t submit it more than once per engine per month.  They will penalize a site for requesting a re-indexing when things haven't changed at all.

As a side note, don’t forget DMOZ.  It’s a powerful way of being reviewed by human eyes and included in their directory.  Search engines look to their directory for legitimate sites to include in their results.

5. Online Press Releases are Gold

6. Locals are great

Map-based searches are great for increasing your page rank by simply being included in locals search.  They are free, but time consuming to build profiles for each.  Here are the big one’s:

JDM is particuallarly fond of local online listings when the business is regionally-focused.
